Physical Education
In PE lessons, Birkby Junior School aims to provide pupils with broad experiences of a range of sports and activities, to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. The PE curriculum is divided into four areas: games, athletics, gymnastics and dance. In Years 3 and 4, PE lessons focus on supporting the development of the related skills, progressing to application of these skills across a range of sports in Years 5 and 6. Through continuous, formative assessment, pupils are then confident to evaluate and recognise their own, and others, success.
All pupils are both included and challenged in PE lessons through the use of adaptive teaching of STEP (differing the use of space, task, equipment and people). Leadership is promoted in PE through the use of Junior Sports Leaders, playleaders and PE ambassadors- supporting in lessons, at playtimes and also in year group and whole school competitions.
Pupils enjoy applying the skills they have developed in PE lessons (as well as extra-curricular clubs) to partake it competitive sport- from within the actual lesson, to year group and out of school sporting competitions.
Birkby Junior School work closely with the Pennine Sports Partnership to continue to develop sport in school, both within and beyond the curriculum.
Please see the ‘Sports Premium’ section of the website for the aims and impact of this funding.
