Happy New Year to all of Year 6!

We hope you had a fantastic holiday and are ready for the Spring Term, which will be exciting, challenging and fun!

What will we be learning?

We are going to be covering a range of exciting, new topics in the coming Spring term, including our new text in English, Letters from the Lighthouse!

We will be continuing our learning on World War II as well as looking at politics and the birth of the NHS in post-war Britain.

Later in the term, we will be exploring the local area and going on a trip to the University, which is very exciting!

We will also be returning to Bradley Woods for our Year 6 residential trip. Look out for information regarding this coming very soon.

In the lead up to SATS in May, we will continue to work hard in preparation with additional booster sessions each week. Don’t forget you can continue with your preparation at home using study books, Mathletics and BBC Bitesize.

We are looking forward to another challenging term with lots of hard work!

Please see the curriculum newsletter for an overview of our learning.

Please remember…

What will I need to bring to school?

When you return to school in January, you will be all be given study books for English and Maths which will help your learning throughout the year. You will need to remember to bring your study books and your planner into school every day.  Your teacher will check your planner regularly and an adult at home will need to too.  Your study books will be used in class and you will be expected to use them at home too!

You will be informed by your class teacher when you have PE lessons and we will be continuing with the routine of children arriving for school in their PE kits on their allocated days.  Make sure you have suitable footwear for PE, as we will be going outdoors for PE as much as possible.

What work will I need to do at home?

Read and complete activities in your study books regularly!

You will also receive homework every week (approximately 30 minutes per evening) in line with government guidance and you will be expected to complete it on time. There will usually be a piece of English, Maths and Science homework, but sometimes there may be homework linked to another subject to support another area of your studies.  If you struggle with your homework please do come and ask for help; we will be only too happy to do so!

Spellings will also be learnt but this may not always be in the form of a weekly test. We follow current research and use a variety of effective and creative ways to help children learn their spellings.

In addition to this, it is important that you continue to read and discuss texts with someone at home on a regular basis.  You will be able to visit the school library once a week, in order to select a new reading book. Try and read every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes.  It doesn’t have to be the school library book – it could be a magazine you have read, game instructions, a recipe or any other texts you have been reading.
